The authors really need to do some major adjustments to this idea to help it to sit better with the existing milieu. Now the roof structure is colossal and forms a very uncomfortable and clumsy relationship with the existing museum buildings. The roof overhang on the north side is unnecessary as the terrace area beneath will be in shadow for most of the day. The partial view of the illuminated roof over the Mannerheimintie wall is sufficient to arouse the curiosity of passersby. A square version of the same inverted roof form idea might work better and also be more unique in this context. It‘s certainly worth exploring. The spatial internal transition from the existing building to the gallery spaces of the extension has a kind of inevitable drama and monumentality that raises expectations about the exhibits and spatial experiences awaiting the visitor below ground. This might mean a re-examination and refinement of the underground space in which the central route terminates. At the moment it is a bit of an anticlimax. The planning logic of the new extension seems to be ok otherwise.

The balustrade is shown in the section drawing, but not on the perspective view. Those are not big problems, the large undercutting of the existing Museum may be much bigger. That is the point of the second stage – to fix the problems, and all the finalists have some. Besides Lahde, this Atlas dish has the potential to become the winner, if the decision makers desire something bold, contrasting, recognizable and modern.

This ”NIEMEYER U.F.O. IN HELSINKI” project uses a copy of the Niemeyer’s upside-down dome in Brasilia, just made more shallow, as its main feature. That looks interesting, like some U.F.O that landed in the courtyard. The effect is seen well by birds, but not well from the street, as the wall hides it. I would like to see a pedestrian perspective from the courtyard. The minimalist-brutalist interior has a scary feel, some timber finish may soften and humanize it. The grand stairs look good, but the people want the escalators. The cantilevered structural support for the U.F.O. roof may be an issue, but the steel trusses may be able to handle it.
